The product version and database version are not compatible.

August 11, 2018 by neal Leave a Comment

This isn’t a very comforting message the first time you see it:

It’s pretty simple to resolve though. The problem is that the MDS application (product) and repository (database) are on different versions and the repository needs to be upgraded. This is usually the result of a service pack being deployed to SQL Server.

1. RDP to the MDS application server and select “Master Data Services Configuration Manager”.

2. In the Configuration Manager, select “Database Configuration” on the left.

3.  You should see the error below in the the Database Configuration window.

4. Select “Upgrade Database…”.

5. Select “Next”.

6. Depending on the size of the repository, this may run for several minutes.

7. When the upgrade is complete, there will be a “Success” message under “Status”. Click “Finish”.

8. Your repository upgrade is complete.

Speaking at SQLSaturday #800 Atlanta BI 2018

August 8, 2018 by neal Leave a Comment

On Saturday, September 22nd, I’m speaking at SQLSaturday #800 Atlanta BI 2018! I’ll be presenting a new session “Data Quality – Plain & Simple”. I’ve been looking forward to this event and presentation for a while.

Data quality is a subject that comes up over and over again in many organizations. Most executives are concerned about the quality of the information used in their decisions. We talk about “good data” and “bad data” but what do those terms mean? In this presentation, we will first define what data quality is and look at how to measure it with data quality dimensions. Then, we’ll explore common causes for data quality issues and how to perform a data quality assessment. Finally, we’ll review the results and discuss some strategies and tools that can help improve the quality of the data in your organization.

We’ve got some great Precons and speakers lined up this year. If you’re able to attend, please stop by and say hello.

MDM & Data Governance Chicago 2018

July 17, 2018 by neal Leave a Comment

Last week I was in Chicago for the MDM & Data Governance conference. I was able to attend last fall in New York and felt it helped me expand my understanding of several MDM related topics. Most importantly, I was able to get a clear picture of the future of MDM with Big Data, GDPR, and the cloud.

This event is a little different than the ones I’ve been to before in that its focused only on MDM and DG. The advantage is multiple sessions can go into detail on topics that are often overlooked by other conferences. There was a wide range of topics covered, and it was difficult to choose between sessions.

This time I again enjoyed hearing and learning about the case studies. It’s always helpful to review what others have done and the issues they’ve faced. The conference overall was excellent, and the focus seemed to be on companies facing challenges with multi-domain MDM and data lakes. I’ll try to attend again in the fall.
